Lyrics

Verse 1

We fixed the wheel beside the road,

Set the pin and tightened true.

What once had failed beneath the load

Held fast because we knew what to do.

Verse 2

The wagons rolled, the tools rang clear,

Each part replied when rightly named.

What slowed us down no longer feared—

The work stayed hard, but it was tamed.

Chorus

We learned the weight was not the thing,

Nor hand nor tool nor pull nor strain.

The lesson came with knowing when

To shift the load and lift again.

Verse 3

No cart was left, no blade cast off,

No skill uncounted or ignored.

But hands began to trade and stop

Before the work became the lord.

Verse 4

We measured pulls and marked the day,

Watched who bent and who stood tall.

What lightened us along the way

Was knowing none should bear it all.

Chorus

We learned the weight was not the thing,

Nor hand nor tool nor pull nor strain.

The lesson came with knowing when

To shift the load and lift again.

Bridge

We kept the tools and learned their use,

Not every pull must end in pain.

The strength we gained was knowing when to choose

To leave, and reset with who remained.

Final Chorus

We learned the weight was not the thing,

Nor hand nor tool nor pull nor strain.

The lesson came with knowing when

To shift the load and lift again.

The Story

Shift The Load is an original song from the TrueDark Rising world. It reflects the time after leaving Lodsmack -- when the Kinsfolk carried his gifts forward and began learning what to keep and what to set down.

The song belongs to the road between Keepers, when the people were alone with what they had gained. They fixed the wheel, tightened the pin, and let the tools ring clear. Lodsmack's lessons worked -- the weight was tamed, the work was steady. But the deeper lesson was not about strength. It was about knowing when to shift the load and lift again, so that none should bear it all.

The bridge carries the hard-won truth: not every pull must end in pain. The strength they gained was knowing when to choose to leave, and to reset with who remained. Some chose to stay behind with Lodsmack. Those who left carried the knowledge -- and the memory of those who did not follow.

Like all songs of this world, it serves as memory. It is meant to be sung on the march, and understood fully only in hindsight.
